S18 E2 The One About The Quranist

  • 1 day ago
  • 1 min read

In this episode I talk to Farouk Peru about Quranism.  I must admit, I didn't know what a Quranist was until the lovely Ruth Marx connected me with Farouk so it is always lovely to learn something new!

We discuss what a Quranist is, and the use of

A - Application of the Qura'n

R - Refutation of criticisms

C - Conversation

We look at how being a Quranist influences practices like prayer and festivals and their take in orthodoxy and orthopraxy (correctness of beliefs and practices), and what methods they use to determine scholarship, as well as the role of Muhammad and the Hadith.

We look at Islamic law and how Qur'anists repond to some laws that have been interpretted harshly by some.

We are always interested in diversity so we look at variations within quranism, even though it is quite a modern trend in Islam.

Finally we look to the future - where is Quranism going?

I hope you learn as much as I did from Farouk.

The discussion in this episode raises some really interesting points about the Quranist perspective and how it challenges more traditional interpretations of Islam, especially around authority, interpretation, and who gets to define meaning in religious texts. I think what stands out most is how the conversation tries to approach disagreement without immediately shutting it down, even when views are quite strongly held on different sides. It does make you reflect on how religion is often shaped as much by interpretation as by text itself, which can lead to very different understandings within the same faith. I also recently came across rapid assignment help while looking into RE-related academic discussions, and found useful support through Assignment services for students exploring theology, philosophy,…

How to support The RE Podcast

I want to continue to create the RE Podcast as a FREE resource for teachers. However, there are runnings costs. I have to pay a monthly fee to Buzzsprout to host the podcast, I have to pay a fee for the website and the email address, I have to pay a fee to riverside fm to let me record interviews, plus the recording equipment has been a huge investment and needs updating..

There are THREE ways to support;

1) A one off gift at my Buy Me A Coffee page

2) Become and Patreon and give monthly where you will get extra content for FREE.

3) If you can't support financially, please leave a review on apple podcasts
